Language & Meaning

Language is about communication: transferring thoughts from one head to another. Language reflects culture. And language can shape how we think. And how we think drives culture. The history of language is fascinating. I have some thoughts on language:

  • If a group of people are at the same level of mastery on a topic, precise language and jargon can be more efficient.
  • Being overly rigid to rules and precision causes misunderstanding, confusion and distraction. When everyone knows what you mean, but someone stops the conversation on an archaic point of language, we are have stopped communicating. And when language changes, clinging to the past leads to confusion now.

Language has rules. Any rule that does not aid in communication is a bad rule. And usually made up by snooty people and is completely arbitrary. Like split infinitives or ending sentences with prepositions.
